How to get the MIDI out of a Logic Pro project

Logic exports MIDI by dragging regions to the Finder, which gives you a folder of fragments named after regions rather than a song. This takes the project and gives you the arrangement in one Standard MIDI file.

  1. Add your project: A .logicx is a FOLDER, not a file — your browser hands over an empty entry if you drop it. Zip it in the Finder and drop the .zip, or pick the folder with the button.
  2. It is read in your browser: Logic stores its arrangement in a binary document inside that folder. That document is parsed here, on your machine — the project is never uploaded, and no account is needed.
  3. Take the MIDI: The project opens in the studio and downloads as one Standard MIDI file.

Do I need an account?

No. The project is read in your browser, like the FL Studio, REAPER and Cubase converters — nothing is uploaded and nothing is stored.

My .logicx dropped as an empty file

That is the package problem above — a browser cannot take a folder by drag. Use the Select a file button and pick the folder, or zip it and drop the zip.

Does it work on Windows?

Yes. This reads the project; it does not need Logic installed, which is the point if the project came from somebody else.

What about my plugins?

A MIDI file is the performance, not the sound. Your instruments stay in Logic.

  • A .logicx is a folder wearing a file's icon

    In the Finder it looks like a single document. It is a package — a directory with the project document and its media inside. Browsers cannot read a directory that has been dragged onto a page: they hand over a zero-byte entry, which is why a dropped .logicx looks empty. Use the picker and choose the folder, or compress it in the Finder and drop the .zip.

  • Software instrument regions are the MIDI

    Audio regions are recordings and hold no notes. What comes across is what Logic keeps as note data on software-instrument tracks, at the tempo the project runs at.

  • Names, not numbers

    Dragging regions out of Logic gives you files named after regions, and reassembling them in another program means lining up a dozen fragments by ear. One multitrack file keeps the parts together and keeps your track names on them.
